[How to get attachments] [How to send attachments]
To download and view a document that has been attached to an email message:
Open the email message in Pine.
Type V ("View Attachment"). A list will appear containing at least two items. The first item is the email message itself, listed as "Text/PLAIN". The second item is the attached file. It should say "Application/MSWORD" if the attachment is a word file.
Select the attached file by moving your cursor to it using the down-arrow on your keyboard. Type S to save the attachment as a document in your UAC home directory. A message at the bottom of the screen will suggest a name for the file. If you don't like that name, you can delete it and type another one, then press your return key. (To accept the name offered, just press return.)
To get back to familiar Pine territory, press your left-arrow OR your less-than (<) key (no shift needed). You should see the original email message back on your screen.
To download the attachment, which is now a document in your UAC home directory, open WS FTP and connect to your UAC home directory by entering the following information:
Profile name: (anything or leave blank)
Host name: homer.u.washington.edu (or substitute your UAC for
"homer")
Host type: Automatic detect (leave as is)
User ID: (your email login name)
Password: (your email account password)
Click "OK". WS FTP will now display a window divided into two sections: "remote" (this is your UAC home directory) and "local" (this is your desktop computer). Under "local", change the directory by clicking on a subdirectory or folder (to go down) or by clicking on the green, crooked arrow at the top of the list (to go up) until the directory you want to put the attachment in (i.e., "my documents") is listed in the white bar across the top.
Go to the "remote" half of the window and locate the saved attachment. Double-click on it to copy it to your "local" system (your desktop computer).
After downloading the document, quit WS FTP and open the document using the appropriate software (i.e., MS Word, Excel, etc.). NOTE: In order to view a document, you must have the appropriate software installed on your computer. If someone sends you a Word file and you can't open it, they may have used a newer version of Word than the one you have installed on your computer. Try asking them to save the document in an earlier version and send it to you again.

Quit WS FTP and open Pine. Type C to compose a message.
While your cursor is in the "header" area of the message, type CONTROL + J ("Attach"). Pine will prompt you for the name of the document you want to attach to your message. If you remember the exact name, type it and press RETURN. If you don't recall the exact name, you can type CONTROL + T ("To Files") to search your UAC home directory and S to select the file once you locate it.
Pine will now prompt you for a comment to add to your attachment. You may type a few words about the attached file, such as the name and version of the software that created it (i.e., MS Word 6.0), or just press RETURN to enter an empty comment. Your attachment will now show up as a listing in the header area of your message. Type the rest of the message as usual and send.
